Patzcuaro and the island of Janitzio in Michoacan
February 1 - March 1
Patzcuaro is a place you have to include in your list of Magical Towns to visit as you will be surprised by its peculiar houses made out of adobe and the cobbled streets that frame the relaxed atmosphere of this beautiful site.
This region is known for its wooden handicrafts, articles made of iron, and colorful pottery.
Strolling through one of its squares you will surely encounter the artists that perform a dance called “viejitos” (elderly) and while you watch the show you can enjoy a delicious sorbet.
A must during your trip is Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud (Basilica of Our Lady of Health), its façade does not match the beauty inside of this enclosure, so you will be in awe when you enter. Most of the population is very devout to this virgin because they credit many miracles to her, so visitors are allowed to approach the altar and touch her image.
Continue your journey to Lake Patzcuaro Pier where you can take a boat to the very famous island of Janitzio and before you land the fishermen will offer you a very peculiar spectacle. At the top of the reef is the statue of Leader José María Morelos. To get there you have to climb many steps, but you will enjoy a beautiful view. This may not be as uncomfortable as it seems, since throughout the tour are stores that sell all kinds of products from the locality.
If you get hungry, try the “Charales” (a native fish of Mexico) as well as dishes from the region. Do not forget to have a “Corunda” (a kind of dumpling wrapped in green corn plant leaf) typical of Michoacán.
