Atlixco “Pueblo Mágico” (Magical Town) is located in the State of Puebla and just 25 km away from its capital. Over the last few years it has had an important urban growth which is combined with beautiful historic buildings and houses downtown.
As its name describes it, Atlixco has a privileged weather which leads to an extensive development of floriculture. You can see stunning and colorful flowers everywhere especially around the main square. if you plan a trip during November you can admire their famous floral carpets made out entirely of flowers from the region. You have to visit the nurseries around the city mostly in the suburb called Cabrera where they offer a great variety of flowers and trees that are very lovely and at a very low price!
Of course there is great food too! Some local gastronomic recommendations are “Cecina” (dried meat), their local soup and trout. For dessert try some “Jeripa” which is made with milk, egg yolks and sugar or try their delicious and traditional naturally flavored ice cream.
A must see are its beautiful museums, such as the one located in a former Franciscan convent. It has tons of local history beginning from the first ethnic people that arrived to expositions about their traditional festivities during the year. They also showcase splendid exhibitions of art that combined with the majesty of its buildings, will leave you astonished.
A very traditional celebration you can appreciate is the one called “Huey Atlixcáyotl” in which members of different ethnic groups dance in a show full of color and happiness.
Mepot tip: Before you leave, do not forget to visit the peak of Cerro San Miguel and contemplate this marvelous town from the top. On a clear day you can even have a perfect view of our imposing volcano called Popocatépetl.
