Chignahuapan, a beautiful town located in the northern mountain range of Puebla is well known by its amazing views surrounded by trees, waterfalls and the delicious smell of fruits. The cool weather and morning fog is a trademark of this place.
Its name means “over the nine waters” and has been inhabited by our ancestors since the VII Century. If you are not already excited about visiting this marvelous “Pueblo Mágico”, there are many reasons why you should get to know this incredible hidden place.
One of the most relevant occupations of its inhabitants (besides agriculture) is the elaboration of Christmas spheres. Their creativity will leave you in awe because they have as many designs as you can imagine, going from the traditional round ones to special characters such as Minions or dwarfs and everything is handmade. Do not forget to visit at least one of the many workshops there are to see their amazing elaboration process. You can take home beautiful spheres at a very low cost and even gorgeous crystal earrings that you will not find anywhere else.
A good tip is to visit this town during the first days of December since they celebrate their National Tree and Christmas Sphere Fair. This town elaborates more than 70 million ornaments each year!
To enjoy a little nature, pay a visit to the local hot springs and indulge yourself in these natural sulfurous waters which are said to have amazing healing powers. If you decide to stay a little longer, enjoy a massage in their spa. Nearby, there is also one of the highest waterfalls in the state called “Salto de Quetzalapa” with a height of approximately 200 meters.
At last do not forget to take a walk around downtown, mainly because there is an amazing and colorful kiosk which is the only one in the country made entirely out of wood. Also remember to visit the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception where you will be impressed by her statue, which is one of the largest in Latin America with its 12 meters of height and carved cedar wood.
