Getaway – Cacahuamilpa & Taxco

1 January, 2016 - 15 February, 2017

This National Park with over 2000 acres, located 30 minutes away from Taxco, is situated in the South Mountain Range of our country between the states of Guerrero and Morelos. Once used by the local tribes for their sacred rituals, it was discovered in 1834 and by 1936 it was declared a natural protected area.

This beautiful place is open 365 days a year from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The admission fee is $70 Mexican pesos and includes a guided tour through the enormous caves in which a local person explains all the little and important details of the formations that have appeared naturally over thousands of years. Take a long walk and with the help of your imagination and creativity try to discover multiple forms and figures in the water filtrations of these caverns. This tour takes about 2 hours, but for the adventurous ones there is a 9-hour excursion heading to underground rivers, so make sure to plan ahead.

After being close to nature, enjoy Taxco, a picturesque town full of white houses, great food, gorgeous jewelry and objects made out of silver. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains and impressive colonial buildings that will transport you to the past. There are multiple viewpoints around the city but if you take the cable car, with its 173-meter height, you will have the best scenery of the town.

Taxco has had great mining development which you can still enjoy when you visit local workshops where they sell beautiful and astonishing silver creations. You should definitely take some items home as they are made by artisans and sold at a great price.

Also, try some of the local cuisine such as “jumiles” which are tiny insects full of protein or the extravagant iguana meat.

Do not forget to visit the historic Santa Prisca Temple, a lovely majestic monument built in 1750 with baroque style and that was once the tallest building of its time. It is filled with extraordinary paintings of the recognized artist Miguel Cabrera.
